A website redesign is worth it when the site is quietly costing you leads: it loads slowly, breaks on phones, looks dated enough to hurt trust, or sits on a platform you can no longer maintain. A cosmetic refresh runs about €500-1,500, a real redesign €2,000-6,000, and a full rebuild on a modern stack €5,000-15,000+. The one rule that decides whether it pays off: don't lose the SEO you already have.
I rebuild sites on Next.js and migrate businesses off aging WordPress and page builders, so I'll lay this out with numbers and the trade-offs a sales pitch skips.
Signals you actually need a redesign
Not every ugly site needs a rebuild, and not every pretty one is fine. These are the symptoms that actually justify spending money:
- Slow load, poor Core Web Vitals. If LCP is above 2.5s and INP is in the red in Search Console, you're losing both rankings and buyers before the page even paints.
- Not mobile-friendly. More than half of traffic in Poland comes from phones. A layout that pinches, overflows, or hides the CTA on mobile is a hole in your revenue.
- Traffic but no leads. People arrive and leave. The offer is buried, the CTA is weak, the form is a chore. This is a conversion problem, not a color problem.
- A dated look that costs trust. Design from 2014 tells a visitor "this business might be gone." Fair or not, it shows up in bounce rate.
- An unmaintainable CMS. Thirty plugins, a theme that can't be updated without breaking, security warnings, a developer who left. When editing anything is scary, the platform is the problem.
- You can't add what you need. Booking, multi-language, a payment step, a proper blog - and the current setup fights you every time.
- A rebrand. New name, logo, or positioning that the old site no longer reflects.
One or two of these means a targeted fix. Four or more usually means the foundation is done.
Redesign vs refresh vs rebuild
The most expensive mistake is buying a full rebuild when a refresh would have done, or slapping new paint on a broken foundation. Match the fix to the symptom:
| Symptom | Right fix | Rough cost |
|---|---|---|
| Look feels dated, but speed and structure are fine | Refresh - new styling, fonts, images, hero | €500-1,500 |
| Poor mobile, weak Core Web Vitals, content is OK | Front-end redesign | €2,000-5,000 |
| Traffic but no leads, unclear offer, messy structure | Conversion redesign - new IA, copy, CTAs | €2,500-6,000 |
| Old CMS, dead plugins, security risk, can't add features | Full rebuild on a modern stack | €5,000-15,000 |
| Rebrand across name, logo, positioning | Redesign or rebuild (depends on the tech) | €2,000-12,000 |
A refresh keeps the same pages, URLs, and platform and changes how it looks. A redesign reworks layout, structure, and often the copy while keeping the content. A rebuild replaces the underlying tech entirely, usually because the old one can't be saved.
Cost and timeline
Here's the market in Poland for 2026, in złoty and euro:
| Scope | Price (zł) | In euro | Timeline |
|---|---|---|---|
| Refresh (restyle, same structure) | 2,000-6,500 | €500-1,500 | 1-2 weeks |
| Redesign (new design, keep content) | 8,500-26,000 | €2,000-6,000 | 3-6 weeks |
| Full rebuild (new stack, migration) | 22,000-65,000+ | €5,000-15,000+ | 6-12 weeks |
The spread inside each row isn't a "brand" markup. It's real scope: a five-page site is not a forty-page multilingual one with a blog, cases, and a booking flow. What usually stretches the timeline isn't the code, it's content - photos, copy, and the sign-off on who says what.
Don't lose your SEO
This is where redesigns go wrong. A team ships a beautiful new site, and three weeks later organic traffic is down 60%. Google didn't punish the design - it lost the map. Before touching anything, protect what already ranks.
- Keep the URL structure, or 301-redirect old to new, one to one. Every URL that has traffic or backlinks needs a permanent redirect to its new equivalent. Not to the homepage - to the matching page.
- Migrate content and metadata. Titles, meta descriptions, H1s, image alt text, and structured data all carry ranking signals. Moving the design but dropping the copy throws away years of work.
- Check what ranks before you cut it. Pull your top pages from Search Console. The page that looks old to you may be the one bringing half your leads. Redesign it, don't delete it.
- Don't accidentally noindex. Staging sites are blocked from Google on purpose. The classic disaster is launching with that block still in the code.
- Launch the redirect map with the site, then watch. Submit the new sitemap, keep an eye on Search Console coverage and 404s for a month, and fix what slips.
When I rebuilt a turnkey site for a Gdansk marine company, keeping the URL logic and migrating metadata is exactly why the switch didn't cost them a single ranking position.
What actually moves the needle
Owners ask for "a modern look." What they actually need is more leads, and visuals are only part of that. In order of impact:
- A clear offer above the fold. In three seconds a visitor should know what you do, for whom, and what to do next. Most redesigns win here before a single pixel of styling.
- Speed. LCP under one second keeps people on the page and lifts rankings. On a modern stack this is a default, not an upsell.
- One obvious next step per page. One primary CTA, not five competing buttons. A form that asks for three fields, not ten.
- Trust signals in the right places. Real cases, real reviews, a face and a name. This is what turns a visitor into a message.
- Mobile-first, genuinely. Designed for the phone first, then scaled up - not a desktop layout squeezed down.
A prettier site with the same buried offer converts the same. If you're paying for a redesign, my website builds are scoped around conversion and speed, not just a fresh coat.
Checklist: should you redesign now?
Redesign now if three or more of these are true:
- You get traffic but almost no leads or calls.
- Core Web Vitals are red in Search Console.
- Bounce rate on mobile is well above desktop.
- You can't edit content yourself without a developer.
- The design makes you hesitate to send the link to a client.
- Your platform blocks a feature you actually need.
- You've rebranded and the site no longer matches.
If only one is true, a refresh or a single-page fix is smarter money. If it's mostly "I'm bored of it," wait - boredom is not a business case.
FAQ
How much does a website redesign cost? A cosmetic refresh runs €500-1,500 (2,000-6,500 zł), a real redesign €2,000-6,000 (8,500-26,000 zł), and a full rebuild on a modern stack €5,000-15,000+ (22,000-65,000+ zł). The range depends on how many pages you have, whether content is ready, and how much of the platform gets replaced.
Will a redesign hurt my Google rankings? It can, and that's the most common redesign disaster. If you keep the URL structure or 301-redirect every old URL to its match, migrate titles and meta, and don't accidentally leave a noindex block in, rankings hold. Skip those steps and traffic can drop 50% or more.
What's the difference between a refresh, a redesign, and a rebuild? A refresh keeps the same pages and platform and changes the look (€500-1,500). A redesign reworks layout, structure, and copy while keeping the content (€2,000-6,000). A rebuild replaces the underlying technology, usually because the old CMS can't be maintained (€5,000-15,000+).
How long does a website redesign take? A refresh is 1-2 weeks, a full redesign 3-6 weeks, and a rebuild with content migration 6-12 weeks. The delay is rarely the code - it's photos, copy, and approvals. When content is ready, it moves fast.
Do I need a redesign or just faster hosting? If the design is fine but the site is slow, sometimes better hosting, image optimization, or fewer plugins fixes it for a few hundred euro. If it's slow because it's built on thirty plugins and a heavy theme, hosting won't save it - that's a rebuild.
Can you redesign the site without changing my domain and email? Yes. The domain, business email, and hosting stay in your name. A redesign changes what visitors see and how fast it loads, not your address. Old URLs are handled with 301 redirects so nothing you rank for is lost.
